The most popular group in the Caribbean was probably the Blue Rhythm Combo (BRC). They were not only the most popular but definitely the funkiest band for sure. Not many bands had such a high-quality output of heavy funk 45RPM singles as the BRC. They released a couple of 45s on the local Merry Disc label during the early 1970s. All of them are extremely hard to find nowadays and, obviously, became sought-after collector items.

Later on he recorded a couple of 45’s for the Parkway and Verve labels. In May of 1966 a pre-Experience Jimi Hendrix gigged with the group but never recorded with them. After a final 45 for the local Philly label Black Jack, the group disbanded and Carl formed the Sherlock Holmes Investigation a solid outfit backed by a strong rhythm section packed with congas, vibes, flute, organ and sax. of Nottingham, England to write and record songs with Truth
& Soul (Jeff Silverman & Leon Michels), that could help
secure him the ever elusive major label deal. Shortly after
the group met, an instant chemistry led to a series of reggae
and soul songs that have been long-time favorites at T&S
headquarters. Soon after his visit, Liam Bailey signed to
Polydor Records. This is the first 45 from an upcoming
series of Liam Bailey singles on Truth & Soul.

  CAL TJADER - MAMBLUES (7")

Then in 1972 the song was revisited for place on the soundtrack to the full-length adult-rated cartoon movie ‘Fritz the Cat’. Only this time lean, mean time-keepin’ machine Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie was in the traps. Only Bernard Purdie can play drums like Bernard Purdie, and that means purdie funkin’ good!

SONNY RHODES - YOU BETTER STOP (7")

Is it Funk? Soul? Mod? RnB? Yes and no and yes again, it’s a bit of everything! Sonny Rhodes’ ‘You Better Stop’ is an alround post-deepfunk/soul crossover club dancer, good sounding for everyone. First spun on the European cross-genre funk n’ soul scenes by UK  DJs like Ian Wright and Fryer, now getting picked up on the UK Northern scene which is now leaving the old stompers behind and is embracing the bouncing rhythms of funk. Fryer managed to get to the tapes which amazingly were still intact, so we went to work and transferred them at half-speed for a truly explosive sound!

BIG TINY KENNEDEY - STRANGE KIND OF FEELING (7")

Back to back, two total killers from Big Tiny Kennedy - a cutely named singer whose over-bearing and fulsome vocal presence was said to be only over-shadowed by his huge physical dimensions!

  J-BOOGIES DUBTRONIC SCIENCE - UNDERCOVER (7")

Like a lost Cee-Lo Green jam session, Undercover rides a turbid groove, laden with percussion and underscored by a driving bassline. A dubbed-out horn section accents Chrys Anthony's soulful croon in this late-night heater.

  S.M.O.V. - CUMIN HOME (7")

Mario Lovakovic aka Umbo is an artist that is on the fast train to success. Hailing from Germany but now based in Croatia his blend of disco influenced funky breaks is being well received. Cumin Home is a fine example of his skills put back to back with some heavy S.M.O.V  beats and slamming production.

On the flip we see Suonho alias Tommaso Beracardocco Italian DJ/ Producer and all round Knob twiddler, flips a cosmic space 60’s theme tune into a pure breakbeat bomb, this simply can’t fail to win!

  FROOTFUL - SLOWTIME (12")

Frootful, the name guitarist Nick Radford records under, has already established itself as one of the classiest acts on Freestyle in 2011. The single Fish In the Sea received critical plaudits, much radio and club play and the subsequent album 'Colours' was a JAZZ FM Album Of The Week.

FAB 5 FREDDY - CHANGE THE BEAT (12")

As a graffiti Artist, Hiphop pioneer and now a Hiphop historian; Fab 5 Freddy's contributions to hip-hop culture have been numerous. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he was an unofficial bridge between the uptown graffiti and early rap scenes, and the downtown art and punk music scenes, bringing, as he put it ‘the whole music, hip-hop, art, break dancing and urban cultural thing to the downtown table.'

TINO CONTRERAS - EL JAZZ MEXICANO DE TINO CONTRERAS (LP)

Hear latinesque ritual chants in Orfeo en los Tambores, insane percussion in the high-tempo jazz-dance favourite What is This Thing Called Love,  avant-garde experimentation with a psychedelic subframe in Orbita, exotic waltz-time jazz in Visnu and religiously-themed chamber jazz with choir in Credo, Santo and Gloria. Not only that, but noted influences from India, Egypt, Turkey and Brasil create a most fascinating jazz album, the likes of which you will most likely never have heard before. Enjoy!

LORD ECHO - THING I LIKE TO DO (7")

On the A-Side, “Things I Like To Do” is a feel good stomper with fuzzed out organ stabs, a bubbling bass, a stuttering stripped down live break and a soaring horn section. On the flip, “Long Time No See” brings in more sunshine with it’s big Boogaloo vibes " heavy on the handclaps, Latin percussion, voical chants and blurts, and horns and flutes galore….

ZODIACS - HEY RUGH NUT (7")

The band originally released both tunes on their own Zodiac label. Shorty after, Curtis Staten re-released them on his own C.R.S. label. While the mix of Don't Change On Me is exactly the same on both issues, on Rough Nut it isn't. It was not only re-titled Hey Rugh Nut but more important is that it has overdubbed horns which gives the tune a much better dance floor appeal.
